Life membership at Hawthorn is not a long service medal. It is reserved for those who have made a difference to the band and ensured its longevity. At this year’s AGM the band members voted to award Life membership to Mark in recognition of his time with Hawthorn and to recognise his ongoing influence.
In 2008, Hawthorn recognised it needed a program of renewal. As part of that change, Mark Saul came to Hawthorn in the role of Pipe Sergeant. He brought with him a number of new players and an outstanding reputation as a composer and arranger. A year later, Mark became Pipe Major.
Mark introduced players and new styles of music. He continued to encourage younger players, gradually reshaped the playing style and presentation of the band which culminated in winning the 2010 Grade 2 Australian Championship in Coloundra, Queensland.
Under Marks guidance, the band modernised its image on and off the field including the bands current logo, which was designed by Mark. The new logo is identifiably Hawthorn, pointing to the future whilst embracing the past.
Mark stepped down as Pipe Major in 2016 having put the foundations we now enjoy in place.
Marks role as Head of Pipes and Drums at Scotch College has allowed a deep bond to develop between the two organisations and we continue to benefit from this close association. Many past players from the school have gone on to foster their love of piping and drumming with Hawthorn.
Congratulations Mark Saul
